[Book Introduction]

Between the 1940s and 1990s, three Swiss companies—Caractères SA, Setag, and Novatype—produced type for typewriters. For over half a century, they supplied leading office machine manufacturers across Europe and around the world, including Remington, IBM, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermes, and Triumph-Adler. These companies played a crucial role in the design, development, and manufacturing of type components and typefaces for typewriters, significantly influencing the evolution of impact printing technologies.

This book offers an in-depth account of the histories and backgrounds of these three companies, guiding readers through a key chapter in typographic industry history and its socio-historical context. When the factories closed in the 1990s, most of their archives were lost or destroyed. As a result, this publication presents a meticulously researched investigation based on surviving primary sources, aiming to reconstruct this nearly forgotten narrative.

After years of field research and data collection across various regions, this book reveals a wealth of rare visual materials and documents for the first time, shedding light on a little-known story of industrial and typographic history, both locally and internationally.
