[Book Description]

Kerry James Marshall is one of the most important contemporary American artists, renowned for his focus on the significant underrepresentation of Black figures in the Western art tradition. His work spans painting, comics, and cultural critique, challenging the visual narratives long shaped by museums and mainstream media. His artistic achievements have been widely recognized, with major retrospectives including Kerry James Marshall: Painting and Other Stuff (2014), which toured Antwerp, Copenhagen, Barcelona, and Madrid, and Mastry (2017), exhibited in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. He was also awarded the MacArthur Fellowship in 1997.

Though best known for his paintings, Marshall has devoted considerable effort to printmaking since his early years, producing a rich yet rarely seen body of prints. From a young age, he deliberately practiced various traditional techniques including drawing, egg tempera, woodcut, etching, and intaglio. He recalls, “When I was in my twenties, I was painting in egg tempera... I was very skilled in printmaking—woodcut, etching, aquatint—I did it all.”

Most of Marshall’s prints were not created in professional print shops but were made by himself in his studio. These range from small postcard-sized works to the monumental Untitled (1998–99), a 50-foot-long piece composed of 12 woodcut panels, as well as multiple versions of his ongoing signature series Rythm Mastr, demonstrating his technical depth and creative ambition. While some of these works are held in major museum collections, many remain in private hands or the artist’s personal archive, little known to the public.

This book offers the first systematic presentation of Marshall’s printmaking oeuvre, revealing a lesser-known facet of the master artist and completing an essential piece of his visual language.
