The popular monthly "Brain" series "How to Look at Design" has been published in book form! This book asks "What is design?" from the designs that are the roots of 50 creators who are active across fields and generations.
Since the Japan Patent Office's "Design Management Declaration" in May 2018, more and more companies are introducing and practicing design management and design thinking. According to the "Survey on the Use of Design in Corporate Management" (2020, Japan Design Promotion Organization), "companies with high sales growth are proactive in investing in and educating design, and practicing methods that utilize a design perspective."
So what exactly is the "design perspective" mentioned here? What is "design" in the first place? Since 2009, the monthly magazine "Brain" has been pursuing the answer to the question "What is design?" together with top creators through a series called "How to Look at Design." The clues lie in the perspectives and points of view that over 170 people used to arrive at their answers, as well as the many breakthrough experiences that led to them.
This book contains 50 carefully selected articles from among them. Each person's answer is introduced along with examples of the designs that influenced them.
Classic graphic design, product design, editorial design, photography, and art works are featured, as well as everyday household items and novels. This book will provide hints for anyone involved in creative work, as well as any businessperson who wants to incorporate a design perspective into their business.
