【Book Description】

Kunst mit Eigen-Sinn traces the development of avant-garde Austrian art jewellery from the 1970s to the present, with a particular focus on the influential role played by women in shaping this field. Published in conjunction with the long-running exhibition at Museum Angerlehner, the book uses rich visuals and clear curatorial context to show how female artists have pushed beyond conventional boundaries, expanding the possibilities of material, concept, and artistic expression in jewellery.

Featuring around 80 representative works, the book showcases a spectrum of practices—from strongly sculptural pieces to jewellery defined by conceptual inquiry—revealing the distinctive landscape of Austrian avant-garde design. Works by emerging artists are also included, illustrating how a new generation builds upon the experimental spirit of their predecessors while developing their own aesthetic directions. Together, these works highlight the diversity and vibrancy of Austria’s contemporary jewellery scene.

The title references the landmark 1985 exhibition Kunst mit Eigen-Sinn (“Willful Art”) held at the Museum of the 20th Century in Vienna, widely regarded as a milestone in the artistic and social history of women. In the same spirit, this book serves not only as a survey of art jewellery but also as a testament to how women have reshaped the vocabulary of the medium through creativity, innovation, and personal vision.

Presented in English and German, this publication is an essential resource for readers interested in jewellery design, women’s art history, and avant-garde craft.
