Book Description

Arata Isozaki (born 1931) is one of the most important and internationally influential Japanese architects of the contemporary era. Since establishing his architectural practice in 1963, his work has spanned Japan, Europe, and the United States, and in more recent years has extended to China. Through both his architectural practice and theoretical writings, Isozaki has consistently acted as a vital bridge between East and West—introducing Japanese architecture to a global audience while simultaneously bringing Western architectural thought into Japan. His contributions have had a profound impact on global architectural culture in the postwar period.

This book presents a carefully curated selection of Isozaki’s extensive and diverse body of work, organized into six thematic chapters structured around his architectural thinking. The framework of the book was conceived collaboratively by Isozaki himself and architectural historian Ken Tadashi Oshima, reflecting both Isozaki’s long-standing theoretical concerns and the evolving design strategies and formal languages evident in his built works.

Each chapter opens with an introduction by Ken Tadashi Oshima, establishing a clear historical and conceptual context, followed by a conceptual essay written by Isozaki that articulates his core perspectives on architecture, the city, and culture. The projects are then examined in depth and richly illustrated with materials drawn from the Isozaki Office Archive, including sketches, silkscreens, drawings, photographs, and models.

More than a monograph of architectural works, this volume offers an essential framework for understanding Isozaki’s intellectual system and his pivotal position within global architectural history. It is an indispensable reference and a valuable collectible for architects, scholars, and readers with a deep interest in design culture.
