【Book Description】

Few contemporary artists have explored the complex intersections of race, history, culture, and media as profoundly as Arthur Jafa. Working across cinematography, video art, photography, sculpture, and large-scale installations, Jafa has devoted his career to a central question: how can a visual language be created that truly reflects the experiences, rhythms, and realities of Black life?

Arthur Jafa: I Am Tony is the most comprehensive publication on the artist to date, offering an in-depth survey of more than four decades of his groundbreaking practice. Richly illustrated with 165 images, the book encompasses Jafa’s diverse body of work, including films, video installations, photography, sculpture, and multimedia projects, revealing how he uses visual culture as a means of examining identity, history, and contemporary society.

Deeply influenced by Black musical traditions, Jafa has developed a distinctive cinematic language inspired by the rhythms, improvisations, and emotional intensity of jazz, soul, and hip-hop. Over the years, he has assembled an extensive archive of imagery drawn from news media, cinema, social networks, historical records, and popular culture. Through editing, collage, montage, and recontextualization, he transforms these materials into powerful works that challenge viewers to reconsider how race, memory, and representation are constructed and experienced.

Jafa’s work confronts the histories of racial violence, systemic oppression, and social inequality embedded within American society, while also celebrating the immense cultural influence of Black music, entertainment, and visual expression. His projects serve simultaneously as historical reflection and contemporary critique, examining how images shape public consciousness and how Black experiences are represented, circulated, and consumed in today’s media landscape.

In addition to featuring landmark works such as Love is the Message, The Message is Death and The White Album, the publication includes interviews, critical essays, and scholarly contributions that offer multiple perspectives on Jafa’s artistic vision and cultural significance. Contributions from leading curators, critics, and thinkers provide valuable context for understanding the breadth and impact of his work.

Published in conjunction with a major solo exhibition at the New Museum in New York, Arthur Jafa: I Am Tony is more than an artist monograph—it is a compelling exploration of image politics, cultural memory, and contemporary society. Essential reading for those interested in contemporary art, visual culture, race studies, and media theory, this volume offers a comprehensive introduction to one of the most influential artists of our time.
