How do we sense that life is moving forward? It does not necessarily come through dramatic turning points. It may be found simply in the rise and fall of another breath, in footsteps continuing to meet the ground, in birdsong recurring with a similar rhythm, or in the subtle changes that emerge when the same action is repeated day after day. These patterns may appear ordinary, yet they form the most fundamental rhythms of life. Taking nearly fifty years of work by Belgian artist Linda Vinck as its central thread, Basic Rhythms of Being: Linda Vinck. A Life in Patterns reveals how she transforms repetition, displacement, pauses, and variation into a visual language situated between writing, music, nature, and the body.
Vinck’s compositions are often made up of short lines, curves, angular strokes, and symbols resembling written characters. Viewed individually, they carry no definite verbal meaning. Yet as hundreds of marks gradually gather, change direction, disperse, and rearrange themselves, they form structures reminiscent of musical scores, woven textiles, flocks of birds, or growing cells. Viewers do not necessarily need to decipher every symbol: density can suggest volume, direction can indicate speed, and the spaces between marks can convey breath and pause. In her work, pattern is not an ornament applied to the surface of an object, but a trace left behind as time passes through the image.
Repetition is the most consistent element in Vinck’s practice, while difference keeps each repetition alive. Similar marks appear again and again, yet their size, angle, and spacing are never exactly the same. The resistance encountered as a carving tool moves across a printing plate, the speed at which paper absorbs ink, and minute variations in the pressure of the hand all alter the final result. Regularity is not a predetermined geometric formula imposed on the work, but an order that gradually emerges through sustained activity. Chance is not an error to be eliminated, but evidence that materials and the body are participating in the act of creation together.
Music and dance offer her another way of organizing the image. The lengths of lines function like musical notes, changes in color resemble alternating voices, and the gathering and dispersal of forms suggest rhythms accelerating or fading away. In her Bird Songs series, a limited group of marks is repeatedly recombined, making each work resemble a different song performed within the same scale. Bolero, meanwhile, evokes the way a melody can gradually accumulate sound, weight, and a sense of space through continuous repetition. Vinck has also collaborated with musicians to transform images into performances, creating a fluid relationship between seeing and listening.
Travel further changed the speed and color of this symbolic system. Her longstanding exchanges with Japan, South Africa, and Cape Verde did not result in directly recognizable images of foreign cultures; instead, they entered the internal rhythm of her work. The repetitive, forceful beats of Cape Verdean Funaná music intensified her colors and gave her compositions the energy of collective movement. Japanese culture’s sensitivity to nature, space, and subtle sounds, meanwhile, created a more finely attuned relationship between symbols and empty space. What these different places left behind was not a collection of appropriated patterns, but a transformation in the pace of seeing, listening, and living.
A Life in Patterns refers to more than the fact that Vinck has created a vast number of patterns. For nearly fifty years, she has repeatedly returned to similar questions: How much variation can be produced from a limited set of elements? How does a single mark become a group? Where does order arise, and where is it disrupted? From small prints, works on paper, and color paintings to large-scale projects extending across walls and architectural spaces, her practice unfolds like an extended series of variations, continually returning to certain fundamental forms while reaching a different destination each time through changes in material, location, travel, and stage of life.
The book contains 240 color and 44 black-and-white images, offering a comprehensive view of Linda Vinck’s work across printmaking, painting, works on paper, and spatial projects. Through image scale, double-page compositions, and the careful control of white space, the book design continues the rhythms of the works themselves, making the act of turning the pages part of the viewing experience. Readers can move close to the details of paper, ink, and carved marks, or step back to observe how small symbols gradually expand into visual fields with an environmental presence.
Ultimately, *Basic Rhythms of Being* presents a way of understanding life through repetition. Breathing, heartbeats, seasons, sounds, and daily habits continually return, yet no repetition is ever truly identical. Linda Vinck allows small marks to accumulate, enabling order and chance, the individual and the collective, silence and sound to coexist within the image. Pattern therefore becomes more than a visual form: it becomes a visible structure of how life moves, changes, and leaves its traces.
