Book Description

This book is a major monograph dedicated to one of the most original and enigmatic figures in twentieth-century Italian architecture—Carlo Mollino (1905–1973). It offers a comprehensive overview of his extraordinary achievements across architecture, interior design, and furniture design.

Mollino’s creative language was deeply influenced by Futurism and Surrealism, while also drawing inspiration from modern masters such as Gaudí, Mendelsohn, Alvar Aalto, and Le Corbusier. Despite these influences, he developed a highly personal and unclassifiable style of his own. His architectural projects are marked by dramatic expression and powerful imagination, with landmark works including the Lago Nero ski station, the Teatro Regio in Turin, and the Lutrario Ballroom, all of which demonstrate his unique understanding of space, structure, and sensory experience.

However, following the demolition of his largest and most ambitious work, the Ippica in Turin, and the loss of many of his most important interior designs, the primary surviving evidence of Mollino’s creative vision today lies in his furniture. Celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship and avant-garde forms, these pieces often resemble sculptural works rather than conventional examples of industrial design.

Drawing on a wealth of rare historical photographs and original archival documents, this book reconstructs Mollino’s entire career through more than eighty interiors and furniture pieces, offering a thorough view of the evolution and realization of his design thinking. As Mollino’s influence on architectural history and modern taste continues to gain recognition, this volume provides a clear and in-depth portrait of a visionary figure whose work has left a lasting impact on contemporary design culture. The book includes 360 illustrations, 31 of them in color.
