Book Description

In February 2005, artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude completed one of their most iconic public art projects, The Gates, in Central Park, New York City. Originally conceived in 1979, the project took decades of planning and negotiation before finally being realized in the heart of the city’s most beloved landscape.

Installed along the park’s pathways were 7,500 vinyl gates, each standing 16 feet high (approximately 4.9 meters) and draped with vivid saffron-colored fabric panels. Viewed from above, the installation appeared as a winding, flowing golden river through the park. For visitors walking beneath the gates, the experience was that of moving through a soft, luminous canopy, where color, rhythm, and space merged into an immersive environment.

The Gates was financed entirely by the artists through their C.V.J. Corporation. The components were fabricated in local factories and installed by New York–based workers, reflecting the artists’ long-standing commitment to independence while also providing employment for thousands of city residents. This temporary public artwork remained on view for 16 days, after which it was dismantled and all materials were recycled, demonstrating a strong awareness of environmental responsibility and coexistence with the urban landscape.

The installation was free and open to the public, and Central Park remained fully accessible throughout the exhibition period. Visitors were able to move through the park as usual, encountering art seamlessly integrated into everyday city life and rediscovering a familiar environment through a new visual and spatial experience.

This book features 14 high-quality full-color plates, documenting the scale, color intensity, and atmosphere of The Gates. Suitable for framing, it serves as an important visual record of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s public art practice.
