Book Description

In 1941, Henri Matisse underwent major surgery following a serious illness, leaving him physically weakened. For many artists, such a turning point might have signaled the gradual end of a creative career. For Matisse, however, it became the beginning of an extraordinary reinvention. Color Unbound: Henri Matisse 1941–1954 focuses on the final thirteen years of his life, offering a fresh perspective on a period long regarded simply as his "late style" and revealing how physical limitations gave rise to an entirely new artistic vision.

Following his operation in 1941, Matisse was no longer able to sustain the long hours required for painting. Rather than diminishing his artistic ambition, these constraints led him to develop the revolutionary cut-out technique that would profoundly influence modern art. Using scissors, painted paper, and walls as his working surface, he reimagined the relationship between colour, form, and space, transforming colour from a descriptive element into the primary force for constructing rhythm, movement, and spatial experience.

This richly illustrated volume presents an extensive selection of cut-outs, paintings, sculptures, prints, book designs, and major projects including the Chapelle du Rosaire, demonstrating how Matisse continued to experiment across different media in pursuit of an increasingly pure and liberated visual language. For him, artistic creation was no longer confined to the canvas but became an integrated exploration that transcended both medium and space.

More importantly, the book repositions this remarkable period within the broader history of modern art. These works represent far more than the culmination of Matisse's career; they profoundly shaped the development of abstract art, Minimalism, Colour Field painting, and later installation and spatial practices. By extending painting beyond the flat surface, Matisse granted colour an unprecedented sense of freedom.

Color Unbound
is therefore more than a retrospective of Matisse's final years. It is an essential study that deepens our understanding of his artistic philosophy and creative evolution. Ultimately, it reminds us that genuine innovation often emerges from limitation, and that the most enduring creative breakthroughs are born through the continual reimagining of artistic possibilities.
