Counterweight is a visual and conceptual collection that brings together years of creative experience by artist and creator Rick O’Brien. Over the past eight years, O’Brien has worked in Hollywood as a “one-man art department,” independently designing, constructing, and painting sets and props for a wide range of commercial and entertainment projects spanning fashion, technology, media, and public institutions. Working within highly commercialized and fast-paced production environments, he developed a keen sensitivity to space, objects, and emotional tension.

The images in this book draw from those diverse professional experiences while also extending into the artist’s observations and inner reflections from everyday life. O’Brien transforms the emotions, atmospheres, and human conditions perceived across different environments into a distinct visual language, portraying humanity’s struggles, moments of balance, and ongoing journey through the real world. Rather than focusing on surface narratives, his work addresses the core of what it means to be human, offering a deeply reflective meditation on life and existence.

In terms of medium, Counterweight spans a wide range of materials—including egg tempera, oil, gouache, wood, ink, resin, and plaster—combining painting, construction, and material experimentation to create richly layered, tactile imagery. These works carry both physical weight and emotional subtlety, reflecting the artist’s sustained exploration of his guiding principle: “Fortitude.”

More than an art book, Counterweight is a visual reflection on the human condition and the states of mind that define it. Through a restrained yet powerful visual vocabulary, the book reveals the unique balance O’Brien has forged between commercial production and personal artistic expression, offering readers an experience of both visual depth and emotional resonance.
