The Cowboy, Reconsidered

The cowboy has long been embedded in the American imagination, symbolizing strength, mystery, and freedom. Yet the true story of the cowboy is far more complex and diverse than traditional narratives suggest. This book, published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name, brings together a distinguished group of contemporary artists who reinterpret this enduring cultural icon through queer, Black, Asian, and Latinx perspectives, offering fresh insights and expanding the legacy of this timeless figure.

Since the early twentieth century, the cowboy has remained a recurring subject in art, continuing to inspire artists today. This catalogue presents a comprehensive re-examination of the cowboy across different cultural contexts. Museum Director Nora Burnett Abrams provides a historical perspective, analyzing the myth and mystique of the cowboy; curator Miranda Lash engages in an extended conversation with queer Latinx artist rafa esparza, who reflects on the vaquero (the Spanish term for cowboy) in his work; and scholar Jongwoo Jeremy Kim examines questions of masculinity within Asian American cowboy communities.

The featured artists include: Amy Sherald, Deana Lawson, Wendy Red Star, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Cruz Ortiz, John Baldessari, Mel Chin, Alex Da Corte, Angela Ellsworth, rafa esparza, Karl Haendel, Luis Jimenez, Kahlil Joseph, Grace Kennison, Yowshien Kuo, Laurel Nakadate, Richard Prince, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Ana Segovia, Stephanie Syjuco, Kenneth Tam, Ken Taylor, Salla Tykka, Andy Warhol, and Nathan Young.

More than a catalogue, this book is both a critical re-examination and a reimagining of the cowboy—crossing boundaries of culture, gender, and identity—revealing the multifaceted and profound meanings of this iconic American figure in today’s context.
