Book Description

This book focuses on Cuba in the post-revolutionary period from the late 1950s through the 1970s, examining how design, art, and architecture shaped the nation’s cultural imagination and visual language during this pivotal era. Bringing together a dynamic group of artists, designers, and architects, the volume explores how creative practices materialized revolutionary ideals, while also tracing Cuba’s historical shift from utopian promise toward authoritarian retrenchment as political and social realities evolved.

In the decades following the revolution, design and architecture functioned not merely as utilitarian tools, but as powerful vehicles for constructing national identity and collective values. Featuring nearly 100 selected works, the book offers a comprehensive view of how design carried political ideals, public aspirations, and visions of collective life. Approximately fifty furniture pieces are included, alongside seminal examples of functional design, architectural drawings and models, speculative prototypes rooted in an ethos of “design for all,” and key works of art and graphic design that captured the spirit of the time.

In addition to historical material, the book presents works by several contemporary Cuban artists and designers who reflect on the endurance and transformation of post-revolutionary aesthetics today. Through dialogues across generations, this volume is not only a survey of design and architectural history, but also a nuanced exploration of ideals, realities, and cultural memory.
