Book Description

This publication is curated by the Norwegian Contemporary Crafts collective and centers on craft practices within the Nordic region. Through visually compelling works and in-depth essays, it explores the inseparable relationship between craft and the natural elements. Beginning with earth, fire, wind, and water, the book reexamines how materials such as ceramics, glass, metal, and textiles are intertwined with the natural environment, emphasizing that all craft practices are fundamentally rooted in nature and deeply embedded within ecological systems.

Seven prominent writers and thinkers based in the Nordic region contribute essays that engage critically with both the theoretical and practical dimensions of contemporary craft. Drawing on concepts such as material interaction and material agency, Posthumanism, site-responsiveness, and symbiotic thinking, the book reflects on how craft responds to current ecological and philosophical shifts. It raises key questions: How do artists explore the potential of materials and the four natural elements? Can the relationship between human and material move beyond a traditional framework of mastery toward one of collaboration and co-creation?

By weaving together theoretical analysis and artistic case studies, this volume presents a contemporary portrait of Nordic craft within a natural context while offering new ways to understand the relationship between maker and material. Here, craft is not merely a display of technique or form, but a mode of thinking—one that seeks coexistence with nature and dialogue with the environment.

The book features essays by Randi Grov Berger, Nicolas Cheng, Camilla Groth, Jessica Hemmings, Jenni Nurmenniemi, Æsa Sigurjónsdóttir, and Nina Wöhlk. Texts are presented in multiple languages: English, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Icelandic, and Northern Sámi, reflecting the diverse cultural landscape of the Nordic region.
