Type specimens were originally used by printers and type foundries to present their typeface catalogs. Initially produced as individual sheets, they gradually evolved into complete publications as industrialization advanced, literacy increased, and typographic styles became more diverse. Today, most type specimens exist in digital form, while this book returns the format to print, bringing together typeface presentation, design research, and educational outcomes in a single volume.

Part type specimen and part atlas of typographic creation, this publication documents ten years of type design at ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne. More than four hundred graduates from its Bachelor’s and Master’s programs have explored the possibilities of type through letterform drawing, spacing, and coding, examining how typography can function across reading, viewing, and practical use.

The featured projects range from classical text faces and experimental letterforms to multilingual writing systems and expressive display type. Together, they reveal the richness of contemporary type design across form, technology, and culture. More than a record of student work, the book also reflects ECAL’s role as an important platform connecting education, research, and professional practice, where typographic ideas from different cultural backgrounds meet and shape the evolving landscape of contemporary type design.
