[Book Description]

In recent years, the phenomenon of valuing old clothes as “vintage” and using them to evoke sartorial memories has become a global trend. Whether through purchasing and wearing second-hand garments or choosing newly made pieces designed in retro styles, people are forging connections between fashion and the past, revisiting the aesthetics and cultural atmosphere of specific eras. Fashioning Memory takes this as its starting point to explore how clothing and the body, through the temporality and nostalgic power of fashion, intertwine to create multifaceted experiences of memory and time, and reflects on what this means for contemporary wearers.

Drawing on in-depth ethnographic research, author Heike Jenss conducts extended participant observation and interviews, focusing on a group of 1960s enthusiasts in Germany and documenting how they bring British mod style into everyday life in the twenty-first century. The book describes their treasure-hunting journeys through flea markets and eBay, and examines how fabric textures, cuts, and mediated imagery evoke emotional resonance—vividly presenting the processes through which sartorial memories are revived and creatively reimagined.

The work not only traces the history and contemporary appeal of vintage in fashion and youth culture but also investigates deeper questions: Through fashion, how do people enact and experience time and memory? How have evaluations of second-hand clothing shifted over the twentieth century? Fashioning Memory reveals the diverse roles fashion plays as a medium of memory, showing how style is remembered, interpreted, transformed, and imbued with new meaning across time, space, and generations.
