【BOOK DESCRIPTION】

Religious faith, Black identity, a New York upbringing, and an intense sensitivity to color converge in Genesis Tramaine’s paintings, forming a distinctive language of abstract portraiture charged with rhythm and spiritual power. Gimme Some Sugar is the first monograph dedicated to this internationally acclaimed American artist, offering a comprehensive look at how she uses energetic brushwork and vivid color to explore inner emotion, spiritual experience, and the complexities of human existence.

Raised in New York City during the 1980s, Tramaine has been deeply influenced by Black culture, church life, and her personal spirituality. The figures in her paintings often feature distorted, overlapping, or deliberately obscured facial features. They are neither conventional realistic portraits nor representations of specific individuals. Instead, Tramaine turns her attention toward the unseen psychological world behind the face: human struggle and joy, vulnerability and strength, and the comfort, conflict, and transcendence that faith can bring.

Tramaine constructs her compositions through rhythmic, gestural brushstrokes, allowing intense reds, blues, yellows, purples, and blacks to collide across the canvas. Her figures appear to breathe, sing, or pray within the painted surface. The works possess a rhythm reminiscent of gospel music, yet they require no sound. Emotion is conveyed through lines, blocks of color, and layered paint, creating a powerful and immediate visual presence between abstraction and figuration.

The book features more than 125 full-color images, including Tramaine’s dynamic large-scale portraits and related works. Together, they reveal her ongoing exploration of faith, selfhood, and memories of Sunday mornings spent in church. Also included is a miniature sketchbook containing preparatory line drawings for her major paintings, offering readers a glimpse into the intuitive, raw, and unfiltered beginnings of her creative process.

Bound in a richly tactile indigo faux-leather cover, the book is designed to evoke the appearance and presence of a modern Bible, making the publication itself an extension of Tramaine’s spiritual world. Gimme Some Sugar is not only an artist monograph, but also a profound dialogue on Black portraiture, inner emotion, religious faith, and the expressive power of painting.
