【Book Introduction】

This book offers the first comprehensive retrospective of Danish ceramic artist Gitte Jungersen (b. 1967), covering nearly two decades of her creative journey. Since her debut in 1995, Jungersen has been known for her radical experiments with ceramic materials and her distinctive artistic language. Her innovative use of glazes—highly reactive and unpredictable—has earned widespread attention. During firing, these glazes melt, flow, and crack in uncontrollable ways, creating textures that resemble geological formations. The result is a dynamic tension between natural processes and artistic intent.

Once cooled, her works often appear as if frozen in time, bearing traces of solidified motion. This creates a compelling contradiction: they evoke a sense of impending collapse or catastrophe, while simultaneously attracting with their intense visual and tactile appeal. Jungersen’s work redefines the traditional link between ceramics, nature, and earth, while also engaging with the vocabulary of contemporary pop culture. In doing so, she highlights the friction—and fusion—between materiality and cultural symbolism.

This book is more than a survey of her practice. It features detailed documentation and commentary on around 60 key works, systematically presenting how Jungersen uses experimental glazing techniques to push the boundaries of ceramic form. The book invites readers to rethink their assumptions about order and chaos, beauty and danger.
