【Book Description】
During the 1968–1969 academic year, Milanese graphic designer Albe Steiner collaborated with students from the Advanced Course in Graphic Arts in Urbino (CSAG, now ISIA) to develop an innovative visual identity project for the city. This initiative included the creation of a new city logo, signage for the historic center, and a redesigned layout for the municipal bulletin. Widely recognized at the time, the project marked a pivotal moment in introducing internationally practiced design strategies into the Italian local context, providing a practical and tangible model for visual communication at the municipal level.
However, the true significance of the project lies beyond its visible results. What made it groundbreaking was the direct involvement of designers in the civic decision-making process—placing communication design at the heart of urban governance. Now, fifty years since Steiner’s plan was first implemented, the project invites renewed reflection. In today's world of rapid change and increasing complexity, how can visual communication continue to respond to the evolving demands of its discipline and the realities of urban life? Especially in historic centers grappling with tensions between preservation, revitalization, and tourism, what role can design play?
This book brings together contributions from scholars and practitioners who examine life in historic city centers today. It explores how communication design can collaborate with local professionals and communities to meet new urban challenges. Whether through improving wayfinding and service accessibility or shaping cultural policy and activating civic engagement, design holds transformative potential. The volume not only highlights the professional value of communication design, but also offers a more human-centered, participatory approach to urban planning.
