[Book Description]

Hilma af Klint: Tree of Knowledge is the catalogue published to accompany the exhibition of the same name held at David Zwirner Galleries in New York and London. It offers an in-depth exploration of one of the twentieth century’s most innovative artists—Hilma af Klint—and her ideas and creations.

As a pioneer of abstract art, af Klint began exploring non-figurative painting before Kandinsky and Mondrian. Her works boldly combine scientific and religious realms, revealing a profound interest in spirituality and philosophy. In the Tree of Knowledge series, she depicts the cosmic order and inner worlds through a series of rarely seen works on paper, using orbit-like symbolic forms to express dialectical relationships between unity and division, light and darkness, beginning and end, life and death, and spirit and matter.

The book is rich in content, featuring art historian Susan Aberth’s deep analysis of af Klint’s spiritual and theosophical background; curator Helen Molesworth and U.S. poet laureate Joy Harjo’s dialogue on Tree of Knowledge and Indigenous thought; a new essay by af Klint scholar Julia Voss; artistic responses by Suzan Frecon; and art historian Max Rosenberg’s examination of why af Klint was not widely recognized during her lifetime.

The New York Times described her work as “both inspiring and sublime... open enough for viewers to interpret freely, as if being transported to another magnificent world.” This volume not only honors af Klint’s pioneering achievements but also repositions her profound influence within contemporary thought and art history.
