【Book Introduction】

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e tradition. Literally meaning “pictures of the floating world,” ukiyo-e was a major Japanese art form that flourished from the 17th to the 19th centuries and played a significant role in shaping the Western world’s visual perception of Japan. Ukiyo-e works often depicted the vibrant life of Edo, present-day Tokyo, including beautiful women, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, urban scenes, and spectacular landscapes.

Although Hiroshige explored a wide variety of subjects, he is best known for his landscape prints. Among his most celebrated works is the late masterpiece series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–1858), which portrays the city and its surroundings across different seasons and viewpoints. From bustling commercial streets to cherry trees in full bloom, the series captures the subtle relationship between urban life and the natural environment.

This edition is reproduced from one of the finest and most complete original sets of woodblock prints in the collection of the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo. The book presents 120 illustrations, each accompanied by descriptive text, allowing readers to closely appreciate Hiroshige’s distinctive use of color, composition, and seasonal atmosphere.

These works not only became defining examples of Japonisme but also had a profound influence on the development of Western art. Artists ranging from Vincent van Gogh to James McNeill Whistler, as well as figures associated with Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Art Nouveau, drew inspiration from Hiroshige’s innovative compositions, colors, and ways of seeing.
