As one of the most important global events in children’s illustration, the Illustrators Exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair has been a key platform for observing trends and discovering emerging talent for over fifty years.

Illustrators Annual 2025 features outstanding works by 77 artists from 29 countries and regions, selected from over 4,300 entries for the 59th Illustrators Exhibition. The book serves as a visual journey through the diverse languages of illustration around the world, showcasing a wide range of styles and creative voices—all connected by a shared commitment to emotion, imagination, and visual storytelling.

This year’s international jury includes five notable figures from the worlds of illustration and publishing: Walter Fochesato (Deputy Editor of Andersen magazine, Italy), Chris Haughton (author and illustrator), Neal Porter (renowned picture book editor), Felicita Sala (artist and illustrator), and Gema Sirvent (founder of Editorial Libre Albedrío, Spain).

The 2025 cover was created by Sydney Smith, winner of the 2024 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration. The cover design alternates each year between winners of the H.C. Andersen Award and the Grand Prix of the Bratislava Illustration Biennial, making the annual a valuable collector’s item for illustration enthusiasts.

In addition to the selected illustrations, the book includes essays and reflections from the five jurors, along with a special contribution by illustrator and School of Visual Arts (SVA) lecturer Riccardo Vecchio, offering deeper insight into the world of contemporary children’s illustration.

More than just a catalogue, this annual stands as a rich and inspiring record of global illustration practice and creative vision.
