In Miyako Ishiuchi's photography, time is never an abstract concept. Instead, it lingers as a quiet glow upon walls, skin, fabric, and the surfaces of everyday objects. She does not seek to capture the most dramatic moments of an event, nor does she approach history through the conventions of documentary photography. Rather, she turns her attention to what time has left behind: a scar, a piece of clothing, a tube of lipstick, an aging wall, or a personal belonging once held close to the body and now carefully preserved. Since entering the field of photography in the 1970s, Ishiuchi has developed a visual language unlike any other. At a time when Japanese photography was largely shaped by male photographers and postwar documentary traditions, she forged a distinctive way of seeing that resisted easy categorization. Her early series Yokosuka Story explored the city where she grew up, capturing urban spaces marked by postwar memories, the lingering presence of American military bases, and deeply personal recollections. These photographs are more than records of a place—they are intimate returns to the landscapes of her own past. Over time, her focus shifted from the city to the human body, and from the body to personal objects, transforming photography into a means of tracing the ways memory becomes embedded in physical surfaces.
The book is organized into three thematic chapters—Town, Skin & Scars, and Things Left Behind—allowing works from different periods to illuminate one another. Ishiuchi photographs the hands and bodies of women born in the same year as herself, revealing the quiet passage of time through the textures of skin and the details of the human form. She also turns her camera toward the clothing, cosmetics, and personal belongings left by her late mother, evoking intimacy not through portraiture but through the traces preserved within ordinary objects. In later series devoted to Hiroshima and Frida Kahlo, this approach acquires even greater historical resonance. Clothing, prosthetic devices, medicines, and personal artifacts become more than possessions—they emerge as physical witnesses to the intersections of the body, trauma, memory, and history.
The emotional power of Ishiuchi's photography lies in her refusal to dramatize suffering. She trusts that objects possess their own capacity to speak, provided viewers are willing to look closely and patiently enough.
