Throughout his life, Issey Miyake kept returning to one question: What else could clothing be?

Issey Miyake. 45th Ed. looks back on the Japanese designer’s creative journey from the 1960s to 2022. From the “A Piece of Cloth” philosophy embodied in a single piece of fabric, to the Body Series, innovative pleating techniques, and PLEATS PLEASE, Miyake continually reconsidered the relationship between clothing and the body through materials, construction, and methods of production.

For Miyake, clothing was never simply a fixed form placed on the human body. Fabric could be folded, stretched, contracted, and transformed through movement. Traditional Japanese approaches to cloth, industrial manufacturing processes, new fibers, and technological research converged throughout his work, revealing decades of experimentation with how garments could be made behind their seemingly simple forms.

Planned and edited by Midori Kitamura, Miyake’s longtime collaborator, the book brings together an extensive selection of images and archival materials to trace more than half a century of his most important designs. From the way a single piece of cloth becomes a garment to the way clothing ultimately returns to the human body, Issey Miyake. 45th Ed. offers an opportunity to rediscover and better understand Miyake’s design philosophy.
