Book Description

Jablonec ’68 is a publication that commemorates a pivotal moment in the history of international silver jewellery. In 1968, the city of Jablonec in Czechoslovakia hosted the first international symposium on silver jewellery. Against the backdrop of the “Prague Spring” and its spirit of liberalization, artists from both Eastern and Western Europe gathered for an unprecedented exchange. Among them were Anton Cepka, Hermann Jünger, and Bruno Martinazzi—artists who are today regarded as the founding figures of studio jewellery.

The jewellery created during this historic event remains preserved in the Muzeum skla a bižuterie in Jablonec nad Nisou, and even after half a century, these works continue to radiate their pioneering and avant-garde spirit. This book not only presents these significant pieces but also includes a complete reprint of the original 1968 catalogue, offering readers an authentic window into this landmark moment.

Published in conjunction with the 2018 exhibition at Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum in Munich, Jablonec ’68 is more than just an exhibition catalogue—it is a valuable historical document that bears witness to how cultural exchange across East and West helped shape the development of contemporary jewellery. It allows readers to experience the ideals and spirit that gave birth to the international studio jewellery movement, making it an indispensable reference for researchers, collectors, and jewellery enthusiasts alike.
