Description

How long a jewellery brand endures often depends on matters beyond design. One person develops the ideas, another evaluates the gemstones, someone manages the workshop, and someone else decides which traditions should be preserved as the market changes. Jewelry Creators: Dynamic Duos and Generational Gems turns its attention to these collaborative relationships, presenting 22 groups of jewellery creators, family businesses, and design partners to reveal how a piece takes shape through shared responsibilities, trust, and years of working together.

The book is divided into two sections, “Dynamic Duos” and “Generational Gems.” The former focuses on creative partnerships between married couples, brothers and sisters, sisters, parents and children, and close friends, while the latter explores how jewellery knowledge is passed down within families. These relationships follow no fixed model: some collaborators develop forms together, while in other partnerships one concentrates on design and the other oversees the business. Others inherit expertise in gemstone selection, cutting, or metalwork from an earlier generation, yet choose to establish their own brands in entirely different ways.

The works featured in the book reflect these differences. ARTËMER creates a light yet precise visual language through clean lines and asymmetrical diamond rings; Single Stone reuses antique-cut diamonds, allowing traces of time to become part of each piece’s appeal; Lord Jewelry combines engraving, enamel, and colored gemstones in narrative objects that can be opened or rotated; while Selim Mouzannar brings Middle Eastern metalworking traditions and vivid color into contemporary forms of adornment. Behind every piece, one can see how two personalities refine and correct one another, as well as how tradition changes as it passes between generations.

The book does not portray “family heritage” as a success story that continues naturally and without interruption. Skills may be inherited, but an understanding of the market must be learned anew; a brand name may continue, but the next generation must still establish its own design perspective. Jade Trau draws on the industry knowledge of a family rooted in diamonds to develop her own brand; LALAoUNIS continues traditions of classical metalwork and historical imagery while adjusting the proportions and wearability of its pieces; and Omi Gems and Omi Privé transform generations of expertise in colored gemstones into fine jewellery with a distinctly contemporary identity.

Through interviews, authors Beth Bernstein and Sonia Esther Soltani allow the creators to speak directly about the division of responsibilities, conflicts, mistakes, and lessons involved in collaboration. These accounts present jewellery not simply as a beautiful finished result, but as an ongoing process of negotiation. Who proposes the first idea, who is responsible for making the design technically possible, how a direction is chosen when opinions differ, and even how family relationships influence business decisions all become important clues for understanding the work.

The book contains 183 color images, including detailed photographs of jewellery, images of the pieces being worn, portraits, and working photographs. Its large format clearly reveals gemstone facets, metal textures, enamel colors, and structural details, while the arrangement of the interviews retains the engaging pace of a magazine feature. Readers can appreciate the works themselves while also understanding, through the relationships behind them, how a brand’s style develops and how a technique can be reinterpreted in different eras.

What Jewelry Creators is ultimately concerned with is how jewellery is created between people. Gemstones can be appraised and gold can be weighed, but the understanding accumulated through collaboration cannot be measured in the same way. When a piece crosses two personalities or several generations, it carries more than materials and craftsmanship; it also holds the memories, differences, and trust left by working together. This book reveals that behind every brand name lies a relationship that is still continuing.
