【Book Description】

This book focuses on the masterful works of Kawase Hasui, a leading figure of Japan’s shin hanga (“new prints”) movement. Through a carefully curated selection of woodblock prints and in-depth analysis, it invites readers into Hasui’s მშვიდ, poetic landscapes. The book not only captures his subtle treatment of light and seasonal atmosphere, but also situates his work within the broader context of twentieth-century printmaking.

As a key contributor to the shin hanga movement, Hasui integrated visual concepts influenced by Western painting while reinterpreting traditional Japanese landscapes and cultural scenes. His works are distinguished by their balanced compositions and refined details, realized through the collaborative efforts of artist, publisher, block cutter, and printer. This sophisticated production system reflects both technical mastery and aesthetic excellence. In recent years, shin hanga prints have gained increasing recognition in the international art market, attracting growing interest from collectors.

The book also traces Hasui’s artistic journey. Beginning with studies in traditional Japanese painting, he turned to woodblock printing after encountering Ito Shinsui’s Eight Views of Lake Biwa. With the support of publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, Hasui established his artistic direction and went on to produce nearly a thousand prints over a career spanning almost forty years. His works, depicting landscapes across Japan, convey a quiet yet emotionally resonant visual language.

In his later years, the Japanese government honored him as a “Living National Treasure” in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Japanese culture. With its systematic structure and high-quality reproductions, this book offers a comprehensive presentation of Hasui’s artistic legacy and stands as an essential reference for understanding the shin hanga movement and modern Japanese art.
