Comics combine words and images to tell stories, offering a powerful means of communication that can cross cultural, generational, and social boundaries. Artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ad Reinhardt, Keith Haring, and H.C. Westermann have incorporated elements of comics, caricature, satire, and popular culture into their artistic practices, gradually challenging the traditional distinction between “high art” and “popular culture.” The book also places KAWS in dialogue with contemporary artists including Joyce Pensato, Cosima von Bonin, and Peter Saul, revealing the diverse ways in which the visual language of comics continues to evolve in contemporary art.

KAWS began his career as a graffiti artist in the 1990s. In his early practice, he frequently intervened in advertisements and posters displayed in public spaces, overlaying existing figures with his signature skull-and-crossbones motifs and “XX” eyes. These interventions gradually established his highly recognizable visual identity. He later expanded this distinctive character language into painting, sculpture, and large-scale public installations, becoming widely known for iconic figures such as COMPANION and ACCOMPLICE. Although these characters may initially appear playful and cartoon-like, they often convey feelings of loneliness, melancholy, exhaustion, and alienation, giving familiar imagery from popular culture a new psychological depth.

Through the work of KAWS and a range of other artists, KAWS. Art & Comics traces the longstanding exchange between comics, popular culture, and contemporary art. It also considers how characters can move beyond their original entertainment and commercial contexts to become autonomous artistic subjects.
