[Book Description]

Following in the footsteps of Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, and Fumihiko Maki, Kengo Kuma has infused Japanese architecture with fresh vitality and a sense of lightness. Rejecting the language of 20th-century modernist skyscrapers, he has traveled extensively across Japan to develop a truly sustainable architectural approach that transforms local crafts and natural resources into environmentally harmonious works rich with contemporary awareness. Rooted in tradition yet grounded in the present, Kuma’s keen sensitivity to materials has created a tactile architectural language—emphasizing surface interaction, structural innovation, and fluid forms—that rekindles the physical connection between people and architecture. He consistently upholds a core principle: “Respect the culture and environment of the place where I work.”

Driven by this belief, he repurposed discarded roof tiles to build the Folk Art Museum at the China Academy of Art; designed a church in Nagano constructed with birch and moss; and collaborated with local craftsmen to shape the Scottish V&A Dundee Museum into a twisting, layered structure reminiscent of coastal cliffs. His exquisite sensitivity to space, light, and materials allows him to reveal unexpected qualities within materials—for example, creating a sense of lightness in stone at Chokkura Plaza, and bestowing aluminum with an unprecedented softness in the thatched roof of the Yangcheng Lake Visitor Center.

Kengo Kuma’s architecture is a poetic response to place, a balanced practice between local culture and contemporary expression. His works are more than buildings—they embody a profound spatial philosophy.
