[Book Description]

After the age of sixty, Leni Riefenstahl embarked on numerous journeys deep into the African continent, dedicating the following half-century to various film and photography projects. Her most beloved destination was Sudan, where she lived for extended periods among the Nuba people, learned their language, and formed deep bonds with the community. Known for their warmth and peaceful spirit, the Nuba welcomed her wholeheartedly as one of their own.

This book presents a curated selection of Riefenstahl’s remarkable images, capturing not only the daily life of the Nuba but also the cultural richness of other tribes, including the Dinka, Shilluk, and Masai. For Riefenstahl, her time in Africa was the happiest period of her life, and these photographs—imbued with both artistic beauty and human depth—stand as significant milestones in her illustrious career.

As Kevin Brownlow notes in the introduction: “If Leni Riefenstahl had done nothing but visit Africa and bring back her photographs, her place in history would be secure.” In addition to these iconic images, the book also includes an exclusive interview with Brownlow, as well as an extensive bibliography and biographical section, offering a complete portrait of one of the 20th century’s most controversial yet captivating artistic pioneers during her African years.
