Contemporary Mexican architecture and interior design have attracted increasing international attention in recent years. Their appeal lies not only in their bold colors and distinctive spatial aesthetics, but also in a profound engagement with cultural heritage and place. Mesoamerican Modern explores how today’s architects and designers are drawing inspiration from the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica to create a new vision for contemporary living.
While modern architecture has long been shaped by European precedents, many Mexican designers have chosen to look deeper into their own cultural history. Drawing from the architectural wisdom, spatial concepts, and environmental philosophies of pre-Hispanic civilizations such as the Maya and Aztec, they have developed a design language that is both deeply rooted and strikingly contemporary. Rather than replicating historical forms, these architects reinterpret ancient ideas through modern design, creating homes that connect landscape, history, and everyday life.
This richly illustrated volume presents sixteen exceptional residences that exemplify this emerging movement, often referred to as “Mesoamerican Modern.” Within these projects, readers will encounter pyramid-inspired geometries, volcanic stone entrances reminiscent of caves, open-air courtyards exposed to the sky, and spaces where water, vegetation, natural light, and architecture are seamlessly integrated. These homes respond to contemporary lifestyles while maintaining a deep respect for local culture and the natural environment.
Featured projects range from a house in the yellow town of Izamal with water channels woven through its circulation paths, to a beach residence without exterior doors, a contemplative retreat beside a waterfall, and the studio built for renowned Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. The book also includes landmark works such as Casa Pedregal by Luis Barragán, alongside several previously unpublished projects, offering a comprehensive view of this influential design movement.
Beyond the architectural projects themselves, thematic visual essays explore subjects such as indigenous patterns, native flora, traditional craftsmanship, and collecting culture, providing valuable context for understanding the cultural foundations behind these spaces and the distinctive character of contemporary Mexican design.
Written by curator and design writer Su Wu and illustrated with more than 400 specially commissioned photographs by Mexican photographer Luis Garvan, Mesoamerican Modern is both a celebration of residential architecture and an exploration of how cultural heritage can inspire innovation. It demonstrates that some of the most compelling ideas in contemporary design are emerging from a renewed connection to place, history, and identity.
