【Book Description】
MXTP Vol. 1 is a spirited and playful collection of display typefaces, bringing together an eclectic range of expressive styles: blocky, funky, experimental, melancholic, geometric, distorted, nerdy, sticky, obsolete, trippy—and everything in between. Defying singular categorization, these letterforms coexist freely, each asserting its own distinct visual voice.
Most of the typefaces featured in this volume were created during Maxitype’s summer type residencies in Cucuron, France. Originally known as the “Maxitype Free Font Residency,” MXTP is grounded in a simple yet radical principle: prioritizing creative freedom over functionality. By intentionally removing commercial pressure, designers are encouraged to experiment without constraints—exploring references, techniques, and tools in an open, uninhibited environment. There are no market-driven KPIs here—only fast-moving ideas, loud music, and spontaneous prototypes shaped by moments at the pool or late nights at the bar.
Some of the fonts were completed within a week, others in a single day—or even an afternoon. This compressed creative rhythm shifts the focus away from polished perfection, preserving instead the raw spark and immediacy of the moment. These typefaces may not aim for conventional usability, but they carry unmistakable attitude. They are not necessarily designed for brands; rather, they honestly reflect the designers’ emotions and thoughts at the time of creation.
After three summers of MXTP, MXTP Vol. 1 launches the “Mixtape” series. Like a mixtape, this book is not a unified stylistic manifesto but a collage of spontaneous, experimental works. More than a type specimen collection, it stands as a declaration—an exploration of how type design can break free from industry frameworks and return to pure creative impulse.
For readers interested in experimental typography, independent type culture, and creative methodologies, MXTP Vol. 1 offers both visual stimulation and a compelling question: when functionality takes a back seat, how far can type design go?
