From 1920 to 1931, Paul Klee (1879–1940) taught at the Bauhaus, working across the workshops of bookbinding, stained glass, and mural painting. He brought his distinctive use of color and expressive lines into the school and, through the second volume of the Bauhausbücher series, extended his influence far beyond its walls. In his classic Pedagogical Sketchbook, Klee takes a theoretical approach to painting, using geometric shapes and lines to construct a unique artistic vocabulary, and seeking to reestablish the close connection between artistic design and craft. His writing shifts fluidly between the precision of diagrams, the rational rhetoric of science and mathematics, and an abstract, almost mystical intuition—perfectly embodying the core spirit of Bauhaus pedagogy.

Although Klee’s approach bears a strong personal imprint, within the Bauhaus’s culture of diversity and creative exploration, his unique interpretation of abstract form stands as a prime example of that spirit. In this book, Klee presents his complete theory on the relationships between line, shape, plane, and color in visual space.
