Immortal centers on legendary twentieth-century photographer Richard Avedon and his half-century exploration of aging. Known for his bold and unfiltered portraiture, Avedon refused to idealize public figures. Instead, he chose to reveal the weight of time etched upon their faces—what he called the “avalanche of age.” Through his lens, aging is no longer something to be concealed, but a universal, inescapable, and profoundly powerful truth of human life.

Created as the official publication for the joint exhibition by The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, this is the first book to comprehensively examine how Avedon represented aging across different stages of his career. The volume features nearly 100 portraits produced in striking tritone, including images of Michelangelo Antonioni, Truman Capote, Marcel Duchamp, Duke Ellington, Toni Morrison, Patti Smith, Stephen Sondheim, as well as one of Avedon’s final and most moving self-portraits.

With essays by notable writers such as Vince Aletti, Adam Gopnik, Paul Roth, and Gaëlle Morel, the book sheds new light on an often overlooked aspect of Avedon’s artistic practice.
