【Book Description】

Spirits and Spaces is the first monograph by Roger Ballen to present his work in color, marking a significant turning point in his artistic practice. While maintaining his signature visual language—marked by absurdity, psychological tension, and a sense of unease—the introduction of color opens up new layers of depth and experimentation within his imagery.

After encountering the Leica SL in 2016, Ballen began exploring the possibilities of color photography, using light and color as expressive tools to further investigate space and psychological states. In these works, animals and Art Brut–like drawings dominate the compositions, while human figures are reduced to obscured presences or fragmented body parts, creating a surreal environment suspended between reality and the subconscious.

The images in this book are created in collaboration with Ballen’s artistic director, Marguerite Rossouw, within a confined and constructed setting. Built from worn wooden panels and wallpaper, and illuminated with minimal lighting, the space generates a dense and unsettling atmosphere. Within this environment, absurdity, chaos, humor, and tragedy coexist, forming a visual world that resists clear explanation yet remains deeply compelling.

Spirits and Spaces not only demonstrates a significant evolution in Roger Ballen’s visual language but also redefines the boundaries of his practice. It is a powerful and visually striking work that holds both artistic depth and emotional intensity.
