【Book Description】

Sally Gabori (c.1924 – February 11, 2015), born Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda, was an Indigenous artist from Queensland, Australia, belonging to the Kaiadilt people. Remarkably, she began painting at the age of 81 and went on to create over 2,000 works in the following decade. Gabori became known for her vibrant abstract style, often depicting the landscapes and cultural heritage of her homeland.

In July 2022, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris held her first solo exhibition in France, showcasing 30 works including several monumental pieces, many on loan from major Australian museums. The exhibition aimed to introduce audiences to the distinctive and colorful work of Gabori, who is recognized as one of the most important Australian artists of the past decade.

The accompanying exhibition catalogue features all exhibited works as well as additional paintings, offering a comprehensive exploration of Gabori’s artistic journey. Deeply rooted in the history and traditions of the Kaiadilt people, her art reveals a powerful and uniquely modern visual language. The publication includes essays by Kaiadilt cultural expert Nicholas Evans—who worked closely with Gabori’s family—and curators Judith Ryan and Bruce McLean, who provide insights into her creative process, cultural background, and the profound legacy she left behind.
