[Book Description]
About thirty years ago, Santiago Calatrava (born 1951) encountered the classical sculpture collection at the Glyptothek Museum in Munich, which inspired him to create a series of sculptures titled Die Aegineten. This book is the first to focus on the sculptural and painterly works of this renowned architect, offering an in-depth exploration of how he draws inspiration from classical art.
The Die Aegineten series consists of 14 large-scale sculptures made of forged iron, each mounted on weathered oak bases. These works present a modern interpretation of the ancient warrior statues from the Temple of Aphaia, rendered in a style approaching abstraction while preserving their essential spirit. The sculptures engage in a cross-temporal dialogue with the classical sculptures held in the Glyptothek’s collection.
The book also includes 30 sketches, watercolors, studies, and sculptures by Calatrava, covering diverse themes and series. These works demonstrate his enduring focus on the human body and natural forms, which form a fundamental basis for his architectural style.
