【Book Description】
Tsuyoshi Tane is one of the most influential figures in contemporary Japanese architecture. At the core of his practice lies what he defines as “archaeological thinking”, an approach that does not seek to reproduce historical forms, but instead draws from intensive fieldwork, archival research, and the investigation of place memory. By tracing the cultural, social, and spiritual layers accumulated within a site over long spans of time, Tane translates these intangible strata into a contemporary architectural language. For him, architecture is not an object produced in an instant, but an act of sustained dialogue with time.
Tane gained international recognition in 2013 with his design for the Estonian National Museum, a project that transformed a former Cold War military airstrip into a powerful civic and cultural space. This work exemplifies his ability to reframe forgotten histories as collective memory and national narrative through architecture. Since then, his practice has expanded across Europe and Japan, encompassing museums, religious buildings, cultural institutions, and large-scale public projects, while further refining his research-driven methodology into a coherent architectural philosophy.
This book brings together seventeen of Tsuyoshi Tane’s most recent completed and ongoing projects, including the new main building of the Imperial Hotel Tokyo and the Asakusa Temple Treasure Hall. Beyond presenting formal outcomes, it places strong emphasis on the extensive and rigorous research processes that underpin each work. Through a careful combination of images, texts, and contextual analysis, the volume reveals how architecture can emerge from history, land, and memory, and acquire renewed meaning within contemporary society. More than a monograph, this book offers a profound reflection on how architecture engages with the past while envisioning the future.
