【BOOK INTRODUCTION】

Color, symbols, bodily memory, and a heightened awareness of nature intertwine throughout Uman’s work, forming a fluid visual language that resists any single definition. This publication is the first major monograph to comprehensively survey the career of the Somali American artist. Through works spanning two decades, it reveals how she has developed a distinctive and deeply personal artistic world across different cultural experiences, media, and forms of expression.

Uman’s practice encompasses painting, drawing, textiles, sculpture, and murals, often moving freely between abstraction and figuration. She is known for her saturated color palettes, densely layered patterns, rich symbolic vocabulary, and spontaneous, improvisational lines and brushwork. Figures, plants, geometric forms, and decorative elements overlap across her compositions, creating visual spaces filled with dreamlike atmosphere, rhythmic energy, and meditative intensity.

Her work is shaped by a wide range of cultural and personal influences, including the colors and patterns of East African textiles, traditions of portraiture, and a sustained engagement with the natural world. Rather than quoting these sources directly, Uman recombines and transforms them into a visual language through which she explores identity, emotion, memory, migration, and belonging. Her works are at once intimate and introspective, while also expressing a bold, exuberant, and intensely vital energy.

Published to accompany Uman’s major survey exhibition at the Hessel Museum of Art, Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College in the United States, the book features more than 200 works created over the past twenty years. It also includes four in-depth essays that examine her continually evolving practice from multiple perspectives, including cultural background, formal language, natural imagery, and the broader context of contemporary art.

Through extensive reproductions and scholarly texts, this volume not only documents the development of an artist’s distinctive visual vocabulary, but also demonstrates how contemporary art can generate new possibilities through cross-cultural experience, handcraft, and improvisation. It is an essential publication for readers interested in contemporary painting, the African diaspora, women artists, pattern and surface design, and multidisciplinary artistic practice.
