【Book Introduction】

Written by Alexandra Sankova and Olga Druzhinina of the Moscow Design Museum, this book unveils a little-known chapter in design history—the story of VNIITE, the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Technical Aesthetics.

Founded in 1962 in the Soviet Union by design pioneer Yuri Soloviev, VNIITE brought together some of the most progressive design thinkers in Moscow. These designers, known as the "Vniitians," were dedicated to designing for the future, developing groundbreaking theories and practices within the Soviet system.

More than fifty years later, however, this important institution—dedicated to promoting utopian design ideals and raising the standards of Soviet design—was nearly forgotten. After the dissolution of the USSR, VNIITE’s rich archive of images and prototypes was believed to have been lost.

That is, until now. Thanks to the efforts of the Moscow Design Museum and the discovery of personal archives from former VNIITE designers, the story of this remarkable institution is being reconstructed.

This book features a wealth of visual material, including design sketches, models, and prototypes. It also showcases a curated selection of covers from VNIITE’s monthly publication Technical Aesthetics—a hidden gem in the history of Soviet graphic design. These covers, presented together for the first time, reflect the evolution of Soviet visual trends from the 1960s through the early 1990s.

As noted by renowned designer Paula Scher, these works reflect "the communist desire for a perfectly designed world contrasted with the real-world forces of human competitiveness and inequality."
