[Book Description]
To coincide with the major Goya exhibition co-curated by the Fondation Beyeler and the Museo Nacional del Prado, Cahiers d’Art has released a special issue titled Ever Goya. Edited by Staffan Ahrenberg, Sam Keller, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Isabela Mora, the publication invites a number of prominent contemporary artists to pay tribute to the Spanish master through original creations, while exploring the continuing influence of Goya’s work on modern and contemporary art and its resonance with today’s world.
Ever Goya features original works by 26 contemporary artists in diverse forms, including drawings, poetry, photography, and complete series of artworks, reflecting contemporary interpretations and responses to Goya’s spirit. Additionally, the issue includes a scholarly essay by Goya authority Manuela B. Mena Marqués, offering an in-depth analysis of Goya’s significance in art history, complemented by essays from Donatien Grau, Manthia Diawara, Terri Geis, and others, providing multiple perspectives.
The cover image is created by artist Philippe Parreno, based on his new nighttime footage shot at the Prado Museum, which zooms in on Goya’s famous Black Paintings, capturing their mysterious and profound atmosphere. This special issue is not only a tribute to Goya’s artistic legacy but also a cross-temporal dialogue showcasing how contemporary artists engage with this historic master.
