Book Description

Viking Line Grace Development

The Viking Line Grace is a modern passenger ship commissioned by the Finnish shipping company Viking Line, designed to enhance both environmental and business performance. Launched into service in 2013, it primarily operates on the route between Turku, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden.

Design and Construction
Built by STX Turku Shipyard in Finland, Viking Grace measures 218 meters in length and 31.8 meters in width, with a capacity of approximately 2,800 passengers. It is the world’s first large-scale LNG-powered passenger ship, significantly reducing emissions and meeting strict environmental standards.

Innovative Technology
To further improve its environmental performance, Viking Grace was equipped in 2018 with a Rotor Sail system developed by Finnish company Norsepower. This innovative technology harnesses wind power to assist propulsion, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 900 tons annually.

Design Integration
Throughout the development process, design was effectively integrated into the product development stages, achieving a balance between environmental and business objectives. This integration is reflected in the ship's energy usage, propulsion systems, and overall design, ensuring passenger comfort while minimizing environmental impact.

The development of Viking Grace demonstrates how design can be successfully integrated into complex and networked product development to achieve dual goals of environmental and commercial success.

Design Integration in Complex and Networked Product Development

Design plays a crucial role in improving the environmental and business performance of products and services, but it must be effectively integrated into the development process. Through a single case study on the development process of the Viking Line Grace passenger ship, this dissertation explores how design is integrated into complex and networked product development.
