Letters as Symbols: International Collection of Lettermarks
Letters are more than just characters—they are powerful visual symbols.
This book presents a curated selection of logo designs from around the world, each centered on a letter from the Latin alphabet (A–Z), showcasing the endless possibilities of letter-based design.

The project was initiated by Belgian modern design pioneer Paul Ibou, who, over his lifetime, created more than 350 logos and symbols, establishing himself as a key figure in visual communication and brand identity. As early as 1991, he conceptualized the idea, cover, and layout of this book and invited numerous design legends to contribute, including Saul Bass, Burton Kramer, Anton Stankowski, Yasaburo Kuwayama, Ken Cato, and Wim Crouwel, among others.

Decades later, with the collaboration of young designer Christophe De Pelsemaker, Letters as Symbols was finally completed and published in 2017. The book not only features these historical submissions but also includes new works by contemporary designers, offering a unique visual journey from the classics to modern interpretations of letter-based logos.

Each logo in the book focuses on a single letter and demonstrates exceptional creativity and clarity through diverse styles and structural approaches. This makes Letters as Symbols a highly valuable resource for graphic designers, branding professionals, typographers, educators, and students alike.

A tribute to the beauty of the alphabet and a comprehensive international survey of lettermark design, this book is a must-have for anyone passionate about symbol language and visual identity.
