Book Introduction
Molecular Typography Laboratory is a speculative research project by Israeli designer Kobi Franco that delves into the possibilities of experimental typography. It focuses on the tension and intersection between function and aesthetics, content and form. The project is built on a highly imaginative premise: that Latin and Hebrew letters possess a “molecular structure.” From this hypothesis, Franco explores how this concept can be applied to alphabet systems and language frameworks.
This interdisciplinary study bridges design, science, and language. It includes over 150 visual experiments, each structured as a “game” with defined rules, settings, and participants created by Franco. The research is categorized into 11 core themes: foundations, language, gender, formulas, weight, three-dimensionality, gravity, generative design, color, wordplay, and the relationship between type and image.
The book also features four accessible essays that offer historical, cultural, and academic perspectives, broadening the scope of typographic research. Readers can further explore the project through the companion website themtlab.com, which presents additional animated and dynamic works that complement the book’s visual experiments.
Combining Latin and Hebrew characters with a pseudo-scientific visual language, this publication offers an entirely new approach to interpreting typographic structure and design innovation.
