In 2024, the design competition The Most Beautiful Swiss Books celebrates its 80th edition. Organized by the Federal Office of Culture in Switzerland, this prestigious award honors the most outstanding achievements in book design each year. To mark this milestone, the 2023 catalogue is presented in a special two-volume format.

The first volume showcases the award-winning books of 2023, the recipient of the Jan Tschichold Prize, and selected doctoral-level design projects—offering a comprehensive overview of this year’s competition. The second volume is dedicated to the 80th anniversary, serving as both a retrospective and a reinterpretation of the competition’s long-standing design philosophy.

The publication includes five in-depth thematic conversations conducted in English, featuring 20 design professionals from around the world. These discussions explore five overarching topics, using over 100 awarded books from the past eight decades as reference points.

From a total of approximately 412 submissions, an international jury selected 18 outstanding books created in Switzerland or by Swiss designers. These selections highlight innovative design approaches and reflect the current trends shaping contemporary publishing aesthetics.

More than just a record of awarded works, this catalogue stands as a significant reference in the field of book design. It also includes a dedicated feature honoring the recipient of the Jan Tschichold Prize and their contributions to the discipline.
