Tabea Blumenschein (August 11, 1952 – March 2, 2020) was a German artist, actress, and costume designer. She was renowned for her avant-garde works in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly her collaborations with director Ulrike Ottinger. Blumenschein starred as the lead in Ottinger's 1979 film Ticket of No Return, which explored the performativity of identity and gender. Known for her distinctive artistic style, Blumenschein frequently challenged traditional gender roles and was celebrated for her transformations and portrayal of diverse identities. Her works left a lasting impact on the German art scene until her passing in 2020.

Ulrike Ottinger (born June 6, 1942) is a German film director, painter, and photographer. Her works are known for their fantastical and punk elements, often challenging traditional narrative structures and exploring themes of gender and identity.

Ottinger’s notable works include the "Berlin Trilogy," which consists of Ticket of No Return (1979), Freak Orlando (1981), and Dorian Gray in the Mirror of the Yellow Press (1984). These films are renowned for their unique visual style and subversive depictions of gender roles. (wmw.org.tw)

In addition to narrative films, Ottinger has produced several documentaries, including the eight-hour-long Taiga (1992), which offers an in-depth exploration of the lifestyle and rituals of the nomadic people of northern Mongolia. (zh.wikipedia.org)

In 2024, at the age of 82, Ottinger received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the German Documentary Film Awards, honoring her exceptional contributions to the fields of art, photography, and film. (dw.com)

Her works have been exhibited worldwide, leaving a profound impact on contemporary art and cinema.

“She, a woman of high beauty, created like no other to be Medea, Madonna, Iphigenia, Aspasia, decided one sunny winter day to escape her loneliness and to leave La Rotonda. She bought a ticket ‘Aller jamais retour. Berlin Tegel’.”

This is the opening scene of Ulrike Ottinger’s momentous 1979 film Ticket of No Return―the woman of high beauty was Tabea Blumenschein. Unconcerned by all conventions, Blumenschein adored transformation: in a distinctive, avant-garde aesthetic, the two women embraced various different identities and challenged many norms, in the process revealing the performativity of gender. Initiating a dialog between the two artists’ perspectives, these books bring together for the first time Blumenschein’s drawings with Ottinger’s photographs from their joint performance sessions.
